Create a CV as a Free PDF: Step-by-Step Guide and Template
To create a CV PDF for free you do not need a paid site. Open a template in Microsoft Word or on the EU's official Europass platform and fill it in this order: contact details, a three-line profile, experience from newest to oldest with achievements, education and skills. Then save it as a PDF. What matters most is one or two pages, a single column, a readable font and not one spelling mistake.
TL;DR. A CV is a short document that says who you are, where you have worked and what you can do. You can build one free in three ways: Word's built-in templates, Europass from the European Union, or Canva templates. For large employers, use a plain single-column layout so applicant tracking systems (ATS) can read it. For Egypt's Ministry of Labour employment portal, have a PDF ready. Always keep an editable Word copy too.
What is a CV and what goes in it?
A CV (curriculum vitae, often called a résumé) is a summary of your working life that a recruiter scans in under a minute to decide whether to call you. Order matters more than design.
| Section | What to write | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Contact details | Name, target job title, mobile, email, city, LinkedIn or portfolio link | An unprofessional email or a wrong number |
| Profile | Three lines: who you are, your experience and what you are looking for | Clichés such as "ambitious and hard-working" |
| Experience | Title, company, dates and three to five achievements with verbs and numbers | Listing duties with no results |
| Education | Degree, university, graduation year and grade if strong | Listing primary and secondary school |
| Skills | Job-relevant technical skills and languages with levels | Long lists with no evidence |
| Courses and certificates | Course name, provider and year | Courses unrelated to the role |
A blank CV form will not help much on its own. What makes the difference is what you write inside each section.
How to write a CV in 7 steps
This works whether it is your first CV or an update. The steps are the same with a free tool or a paid one, because the difference is in the content, not the software.
- Read the job advert carefully and pull out five key words (skills, software or job titles).
- Pick a plain single-column template in Word or Europass.
- Put your details in the first two lines, with no photo unless the employer asks for one.
- Write the profile last, after the experience section, so it summarises it properly.
- Turn duties into achievements: instead of "responsible for accounts", write "closed monthly client accounts in 5 days instead of 10". If there is no number, state the result.
- Check the spelling and ask someone to read it aloud.
- Save a Word copy and a PDF copy, and name the file with your name and the role, such as "Ahmed-Ali-Accountant-CV.pdf".
Three free ways to create a CV PDF
| Method | Free? | Exports PDF? | Arabic? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Word templates | Templates are free if you have Word or use Word on the web | Yes | You can type Arabic normally | Most jobs in Egypt and the Gulf |
| Europass (European Union) | Yes | Yes | No Arabic interface | Jobs or study in Europe |
| Canva templates | Free templates available | Yes | Possible, but check text direction | Creative roles where looks matter |
Option 1: a CV in Word
Microsoft's support page gives the steps: go to File > New, type "Resume" in the search box, double-click the template you want and replace the placeholder text with your own. In Word on the web you find templates under File > New > Browse Templates, and when you finish you can export a PDF or print.
So there is no need to download "free CV templates" from unknown sites. Editable templates are inside Word itself, and you can write an Arabic CV in them too. If a template is full of tables, remove them and keep the layout simple.
Option 2: Europass
Europass is a free platform run by the European Union where you build a profile and generate a CV in a standard format. It suits applications for work or study in Europe. Note that the site has no Arabic interface, so it is easiest to write the CV in English or another European language.
Option 3: a CV in Canva
Canva has attractive CV templates that suit designers and marketers. There are two catches: layouts with columns and icons may not be read correctly by screening software, and for an Arabic CV you need to check that the text runs right to left and that dates and numbers are not scrambled.
ATS-friendly CV template: getting past the first filter
Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS), software that reads your CV and looks for the job's key words before a human sees it. For an ATS-friendly CV:
- One column, with no tables or text boxes.
- Standard section headings: Experience, Education and Skills.
- Nothing important in the header, footer or inside an image.
- The advert's own words: if it says "preparing financial statements", use that phrase, if you have that experience.
- A standard font such as Arial or Calibri, size 10 to 12.
- The file type the advert asks for, Word or PDF.
Ministry of Labour CV: applying on Egypt's employment portal
Egypt's Ministry of Labour runs an online employment portal where it publishes job opportunities. When we checked the application page in October 2026, it was for job opportunities in Jordan. The form asked for the national ID number, full four-part name, governorate and address, passport number, mobile and WhatsApp numbers, qualification, marital status, email, and years and description of experience. At the end it required uploading your CV as a PDF file.
So before you open the form, prepare an up-to-date PDF CV that states exactly the same qualification and years of experience you will enter in the form. Opportunities and requirements change from one posting to the next, so read each job's conditions on the portal itself. If you are in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, use your own country's official employment portal.
A fill-in CV template you can copy
Copy this structure into Word and fill it in. It works in Arabic or English, and you can save it as Word or PDF:
Full name Target job title | City | Mobile | Email | LinkedIn or portfolio link
Profile: [Title] with [number] years of experience in [field]. My strongest asset is [skill or achievement]. Looking for a [type of role] at a [type of company].
Experience [Title] | [Company] | [Start month and year] – [End or present]
- [Verb] + [what you did] + [result]
- [Verb] + [what you did] + [result]
Education: [Degree] | [University] | [Graduation year]
Skills: [Skill 1], [Skill 2], [Software], [Language: level]
Courses and certificates: [Course] | [Provider] | [Year]
Example: junior and experienced accountant CV
The difference between a junior accountant's CV and an experienced one is where the weight sits:
| Junior accountant | Experienced accountant | |
|---|---|---|
| First section after the profile | Education and training | Experience |
| Achievements | Graduation project, summer internship, accounting software learned | Account closings, tax returns, time or error reductions with numbers |
| Skills | Accounting software and Excel at a stated level | The same, plus the systems used at previous employers |
| Length | One page | One or two pages |
A sample achievement line: "Prepared monthly bank reconciliations for [number] accounts and cut open differences from [number] to [number]." Use only your real numbers.
Writing a CV profile about yourself
The profile is the hardest three lines on a CV. A simple recipe:
- Who you are: job title and years of experience or speciality.
- Your strongest evidence: one achievement or a rare skill.
- What you want: the type of role or company.
Example: "Accountant with 3 years' experience in trading companies, working with ERP systems and advanced Excel. Closed monthly accounts faster than the team's usual cycle. Looking for a senior accountant role at a mid-sized company in Cairo."
A CV is paper; a portfolio sells
If you are applying for a job, your CV gets you the interview. If you are a freelancer or service provider, clients will not ask for a CV. They want to see your work, and that is a portfolio's job. Read our guide to portfolio design to present your work well.
To be clear: Alwaseet does not have a CV builder. What it offers is different. Alwaseet's page for service providers lets you set up a page for your services on an address with your name (yourname.alwaseet.co), where you can add your services, work photos, customer reviews, a WhatsApp button and a request form. The page says you can start free and that there is no commission on requests. You can put that page's link on your CV next to your email so whoever reads it can see your work. If you are thinking about working for yourself, our freelance guide for Egypt will help you start.
Mistakes that get a CV rejected
- Spelling mistakes, especially in the name of the company you are applying to.
- A file called "CV final final 2".
- An informal photo, or personal details such as religion that nobody asked for.
- Four pages for a new graduate.
- The same CV for every job without adjusting the key words.
- An old email address or phone number.
FAQ
Is there really a free CV maker? Yes. Word templates and Europass let you build a CV and export a PDF without paying, and Canva has free templates. Be wary of sites that let you type everything and then charge you to download.
Should my CV be in Arabic or English? It depends on the job. Government bodies and most local companies accept Arabic; large and international companies tend to prefer English. The best option is two versions with the same content.
Should I put a photo on my CV? If the advert asks for a photo, use a formal one with a light background. If it does not, leave it out, especially for companies that use ATS software.
How long should a CV be? One page for graduates or anyone with under five years' experience, and two pages at most for long careers.
Should I send my CV as Word or PDF? Send whichever format the advert asks for. If it does not say, a PDF keeps its layout on any device, but keep a Word copy so you can edit it quickly.
Does Alwaseet make CVs? No. Alwaseet is a platform where service providers and freelancers build a page for their services and receive requests. You can, however, add your Alwaseet page link to your CV as proof of your work.
