What Is Freelance? Beginner's Guide to Freelancing in Egypt
What is freelance? In short, what people call freelance is independent work: you work for yourself and sell your skill to several clients by the project or by the hour, without being anyone's permanent employee. A freelancer is the person who works this way, whether a designer, programmer, translator, accountant or technician. To start you need three things: one skill you do well, a portfolio that proves it and a place where clients can find you.
TL;DR. In Arabic, freelancing is called العمل الحر ("free work") or العمل المستقل ("independent work"). Freelancers choose their clients and hours, but income is irregular and they are responsible for their own tax and insurance. Start with one skill, make three work samples, put them in a portfolio and try freelance platforms such as Mostaql and Khamsat. At the same time, set up a page with your name so that clients who search Google or ask "do you have a link?" can find you. In Egypt, the Tax Authority has called on professionals who work through digital platforms to include their profits in their tax returns.
What does freelancer mean?
At work, a freelancer offers a service to different clients under an agreement for each job, not a monthly salary. Each job rests on a clear agreement: defined work, a price and a delivery date. In Arabic the usual terms are العمل الحر or العمل المستقل, both meaning independent work.
Some companies also hire people "on a freelance basis", meaning they pay per job with no fixed employment contract and no social insurance. That is not wrong, but read the agreement carefully before you start.
| Employee | Freelancer | |
|---|---|---|
| Income | Fixed monthly salary | Depends on projects; it rises and falls |
| Hours | The company's hours | Chosen by you, but deadlines are binding |
| Clients | One employer | Several clients |
| Insurance and leave | Usually covered by the company | Your own responsibility |
| Tax | Deducted from salary | You register and file your own return |
| Tools | Provided by the company | Your own laptop, software and internet |
Fields you can freelance in
Freelancing is not limited to laptop work. Anyone who sells a skill to more than one client can be a freelancer.
| Field | Examples | Usually priced by |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Logos, brand identities, social media, app interfaces | Project or monthly package |
| Programming | Websites, apps, online stores | Project or hour |
| Writing and translation | Content writing, copywriting, general, medical and legal translation | Word or page |
| Video and audio | Editing, motion graphics, voice-over, transcription | Minute or video |
| Marketing | Page management, paid ads, SEO | Monthly package |
| Accounting and consulting | Bookkeeping, tax returns, legal or management advice | Monthly package or hour |
| Field services | Electrical work, plumbing, event photography, private tutoring, make-up | Visit or service |

Freelance platforms: which should you choose?
When people talk about a "freelance platform", they usually mean a site that brings clients and freelancers together and holds the payment until delivery. The main types:
| Type | Examples | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project bidding | Mostaql, Freelancer.com | Clients post projects; freelancers send offers | People with a portfolio who can write a good proposal |
| Ready-made services | Khamsat | Freelancers list a fixed-price service; clients buy it | Small, repeatable services |
| Global English platforms | Many international sites | Like bidding platforms, with worldwide competition | People with strong English |
| A page or site with your name | A services page, a personal website | Clients reach you directly from Google or a link | Any freelancer who wants clients with no intermediary |
Mostaql and Khamsat are among the best-known Arabic platforms. On its website (October 2026), Mostaql describes itself as the freelance platform for freelancers in the Arab world that stays as an intermediary between both sides until the work is fully delivered, and Khamsat presents itself as an Arabic marketplace for digital services. People also search for other platforms by name, such as Freelance Yard and Freelancer.com. Before signing up anywhere, read the terms and the commission taken on each job. Our guide to service marketplace commission and when it hurts margin explains the maths.
How to start freelancing as a beginner: 8 steps
- Pick one skill to sell, not five. People search for "logo designer", not "I do everything".
- Learn it properly. There are plenty of freelance courses and free resources, but what matters is applying the skill to real projects.
- Make three work samples, even for imaginary clients or people you know, and label them as practice.
- Build a portfolio of your best three to six pieces. Our guide to portfolio design covers the steps.
- Set your price and decide whether you charge by the hour or the project.
- Join one or two platforms with a clear profile, and set up a page with your name at the same time.
- Tell everyone you know that you freelance, and put your page link in your bio and on WhatsApp.
- Make every client come back: deliver on time, ask for a review and follow up after a month. Our guide to repeat customers for service providers has practical ideas.

Freelance jobs in Egypt: where does the work come from?
"Freelance jobs" are not jobs in the usual sense; they are projects. In Egypt, freelance work tends to come from four places:
- Platforms: the fastest start, but price competition is high.
- Your network and past clients: the biggest source of work for most experienced freelancers.
- LinkedIn and specialist groups: many companies post freelance requests, such as translation jobs and design projects.
- Google: clients type "logo designer in Cairo" or "medical translator". Without a page in your name, they will not find you.
Watch out for scams: anyone who asks you to pay to "get work" or "activate your account" is usually not genuine.
Is freelancing halal?
Freelancing itself is a form of paid work: you provide a service and receive payment for it. So whether it is permissible depends on the work itself, not on it being freelance. If you have a question about a specific field or payment method, ask an official fatwa body such as Egypt's Dar al-Ifta rather than relying on general advice.
Freelancing law and tax
Rules differ by country. These are the points we confirmed from official sources; for anything specific to your situation, ask an accountant.
Egypt: the Egyptian Tax Authority announced in March 2022 that its head had called on professionals who practise through digital platforms (such as Facebook, TikTok and YouTube), whether as a main or a side activity, to include the profits they earn in their tax returns. In other words, freelancer tax in Egypt is not optional. Ask an accountant about opening a tax file, getting a tax card and choosing the right activity.
Tunisia: the "auto-entrepreneur" regime (نظام المبادر الذاتي) was set up by Government Decree-Law No. 33 of 2020, dated 10 June 2020. The published text defines an auto-entrepreneur as a Tunisian natural person working individually in industry, agriculture, trade, services, traditional industries or crafts, with annual turnover not exceeding 75,000 dinars. Check with the relevant Tunisian authorities for any later amendments.
UAE: what people call a "freelance visa" in Dubai and the UAE appears on the government portal u.ae as a "freelance work permit". The portal says it is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation to people who want to work independently without being sponsored by an employer and without an employment contract. Costs and conditions vary, so check the portal itself.
A freelance contract: there is no single official template, but every agreement should cover the exact scope of work, the price and payment method, delivery dates, the number of revisions, who owns the rights after delivery and what happens if either side cancels. For large projects, have a lawyer review it.
Pros and cons of freelancing
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| You choose your clients and hours | Income is irregular, especially at first |
| Income can grow with experience and reputation | No insurance or paid leave unless you arrange it |
| You can work from anywhere, including from home | You are sales, accounts and customer service at once |
| You build a name of your own | Relying on one platform puts your income at the mercy of its rules |
How Alwaseet helps freelancers
Alwaseet's page for service providers names freelancers among the people the platform is built for, alongside lawyers, accountants, plumbers and contractors. You set up a page for your services on an address with your name (yourname.alwaseet.co), add your services, work photos, customer reviews, a WhatsApp button and a request form, and clients send requests to you directly. The page says you can start free and that there is no commission on requests.
It is not a replacement for platforms if they bring you work. It is where you send anyone who asks "do you have a link?", and it stays yours if any platform changes its rules.
FAQ
What does freelance mean in Arabic? It means العمل الحر, independent work. A freelancer works for themselves and offers services to several clients by the project or by the hour, rather than being a permanent employee.
Is there a difference between a "mostaql" and a freelancer? No difference in meaning: مستقل (mostaql) is the Arabic word for freelancer. Mostaql is also the name of an Arabic freelance platform, so context tells you which is meant.
Can I freelance using only my phone? In fields such as writing, social media management and some simple editing, yes, you can start from a phone. Most design and programming work needs a laptop to be done well and quickly.
Do I need a tax card to freelance in Egypt? The Tax Authority has called on professionals who work through digital platforms to include their profits in their tax returns. Details such as opening a tax file and the type of activity depend on your situation, so ask an accountant before you start receiving significant amounts.
How do I start freelancing with no experience? Learn one skill, do three practice projects, put them in a portfolio and start with reasonable prices for small clients. The first two genuine reviews are the hardest part; after that it gets easier.
Which freelance site should I start on? There is no single best site. If you sell in Arabic, Arabic platforms such as Mostaql and Khamsat are closer to your clients; if your English is strong, try a global platform. Either way, have a page in your name to send to any client.
