Portfolio Design: How to Make a Portfolio That Wins Clients

Good portfolio design means picking 6 to 12 of your best projects and telling each one in two lines: the problem, what you did and what happened next. Then you put them somewhere a client can open on a phone in a second, whether that is a PDF or a web page, with a clear way to contact you at the end. The portfolio that wins work is not the biggest one. It is the clearest one.

TL;DR. A portfolio is a curated collection of your real work that proves what you can do. A CV says who you are; a portfolio shows what you have done. To make a professional portfolio: decide who will read it, keep only your strongest work, write a short story for each project, order it from strongest to weakest and finish with a visible contact button. Start for free with a PDF or a portfolio platform, then move it to a page with your name where clients can actually send requests.

What is a portfolio?

The word comes from a case for carrying loose papers. At work it means your body of work, the visible proof of your skills. In Arabic it is usually called ملف الأعمال or معرض الأعمال, and many Egyptians simply say "بورتفوليو".

How it differs from documents people often confuse it with:

Document Question it answers Who usually asks for it What it looks like
CV / résumé Who are you, what did you study, where did you work? Employers hiring One or two pages of text
Portfolio What have you actually made, and what does your work look like? Clients, and hiring managers in creative and engineering fields Images, video, links, case studies
Company profile Who is this company and what does it offer? Large clients and tenders A brochure about the company
Business portfolio Which activities or products does the company run? Investors and management A management term, not a body of work

The word has other meanings that this guide does not cover: an investment portfolio is a set of assets, and the "Portfolio Diet" is an eating plan. Here we mean the file that brings you work.

How to make a portfolio in 8 steps

If you are starting from zero, follow this order. The method is almost the same in every field; only the type of work changes.

  1. Decide who will see it. A portfolio for a client who wants a logo is not the same as one for an architecture firm that is hiring. Write one line: "This portfolio is for ___ so that they ___."
  2. Collect everything in one folder, then cut. Keep 6 to 12 pieces. Three strong projects beat thirty average ones.
  3. Write each project's story in three lines: what the client needed, exactly what you did and what happened after. Results must be real; if you have no number, describe what was delivered.
  4. Order from strongest to weakest. The first two projects get seen. The rest may never be opened.
  5. Photograph the work properly. Clear daylight photos, mock-ups for digital work and before-and-after shots for hands-on work.
  6. Name and describe your images. Google's image SEO guidance says alt text is the most important attribute for image metadata, that filenames should be short but descriptive, and that images should sit near relevant text. The W3C images tutorial explains how to write descriptions that help screen-reader users.
  7. Put contact details on every page: WhatsApp number, email and your page link. A client who likes your work but cannot find how to reach you is a lost job.
  8. Refresh it every three months. Drop the weakest piece and add the newest.

Where to make a portfolio for free

There are four common formats, each with its own job. Most of them can be started without paying.

Format Free to start? Best for Drawback
PDF (from Canva, Photoshop or PowerPoint) Yes Job applications and email Files get heavy, do not show in Google and get lost in chats
A portfolio platform such as Behance Yes, to start Designers and photographers whose audience is other creatives and companies Clients see other people's work next to yours, and there is no request form for you
LinkedIn profile (Featured section) Yes Jobs and corporate clients Limited space; not built for service requests
A page or website with your name Some platforms let you start free Freelancers and service providers who want requests You have to keep it updated yourself

The simple rule: applying for a job, send a PDF and a link. Selling a service, you need a page the client can open and request from. If you are deciding whether a one-page presence should grow into a full site, read our guide to a small business website in Egypt.

Canva or Behance? On Canva, pick a simple light template, give each project one or two pages and export a PDF small enough to open on a phone. On Behance, each project becomes its own page and the cover image is what shows in the grid, so write the problem, solution and your role in the description and link the profile from your CV and bio.

Using AI? AI tools can help you write project descriptions or suggest an order, but the work itself has to be yours. Clients pay for your hands, not for a generated image.

Portfolio examples by field

No single template fits everyone. These are the things each field needs to show.

Graphic design portfolio

Show two or three complete brand identities (logo, colours, applications on products and social media) rather than twenty logos on their own. Add one line per identity explaining the idea, and give each project one strong cover image.

Video editing portfolio

Nobody watches a ten-minute video. Make a 60 to 90 second showreel of your best shots, followed by three to five full videos as links, and state your role precisely: editing only, or colour and sound too?

Architecture and interior design portfolio

Free architecture templates do not make the difference. For each project show the concept, plans, renders and photos of the built result if it was built. Separate university work from real commissions. The same applies to civil engineers: site photos, your role in the project and no confidential client data.

Company portfolio for an engineering firm

An engineering firm's portfolio needs project types (residential, commercial, administrative), areas, city, delivery year and photos of the finished work. Every project shown must be one you actually delivered or took part in. That is the difference between a company portfolio and a company profile: the profile introduces you, the portfolio proves your work.

Advertising agency portfolio

Agencies sell results: what the campaign aimed for, what was done and what was measured afterwards. If you cannot publish a client's numbers, write "under NDA" and show only the creative work.

Copywriter and content writer portfolio

Three to six samples as published links or a PDF, each topped with one line: the client, the audience and the goal. If you are new, write samples for imaginary briefs and say clearly that they are practice.

Photographer portfolio

Pick one or two genres (weddings, products, food, portraits) and show 20 images at most. A client looking for product photography will not dig through wedding galleries.

Other fields at a glance

Field What to show first
Media buyer Campaign screenshots shared with permission, the goal and the measured result
Front-end developer Links to live sites, published code and your role in each project
Content creator Best posts and videos, and brand collaborations
Visual artist Photos of works with sizes and materials, and exhibitions
Medical translator Samples with all patient data removed, and your specialities
Student University projects, competitions and internships, with your role explained

What the best design and video portfolios have in common

Rather than linking to other people's work, here are ten things you will find in almost any strong portfolio in design, editing or programming:

  1. The first project is the strongest.
  2. Few projects, carefully chosen.
  3. Each project has a short story: problem, solution, result.
  4. The owner's role is spelled out.
  5. A clear speciality instead of "I do everything".
  6. Images and videos that load fast on mobile.
  7. Recent work, not five years old.
  8. Real client testimonials with names.
  9. Prices or "starting from" if the owner sells a service. If you are unsure how to price, see our guide to services pricing in Egypt.
  10. A visible contact button at the end of every page.

Mistakes that stop a portfolio bringing work

  • A beautiful cover and an empty inside. Cover design matters, but clients flip through for the work.
  • A heavy PDF that will not open on the client's phone.
  • Showing work that is not yours, or team work as if you did it alone. It destroys trust in the first interview.
  • No phone number or link anywhere.
  • A portfolio for everything. Specialisation sells better than variety.
  • A broken portfolio link in your bio or CV. Open it yourself every month.

How Alwaseet does this

Alwaseet's page for service providers says the platform is built for any service provider in Egypt, naming lawyers, accountants, freelancers, plumbers, contractors and skilled workers, and invites you to present your work professionally. You choose your page name on a subdomain (yourname.alwaseet.co), add your services and start receiving requests. The page says you can start free and that there is no commission on requests.

When we looked at live pages on Alwaseet in October 2026, including the platform's demo page, a provider page can work like a portfolio that sells. It shows a short bio, services with prices, a photo gallery for your work, customer reviews, and WhatsApp and call buttons. The demo page also shows further sections such as before-and-after results, embedded videos and social posts, an FAQ, guarantee and cancellation policies, and an enquiry form. The client sees your work and requests you on the same page instead of hunting for your number in comments.

It does not replace a PDF when an employer asks for one with a job application. For that, read our guide on how to create a CV as a free PDF. If you are just starting out on your own, the freelance guide for Egypt walks through the first steps.

FAQ

Can I make a portfolio for free? Yes. You can build a PDF in Canva or PowerPoint, publish on a platform such as Behance, or start a services page for free. The tool matters less than choosing your best work and writing its story.

Should my portfolio be a PDF or a website? Both. A PDF for job applications and email requests, and a web page for clients who search for you or open your link on their phone. A printed portfolio is still useful in architecture and engineering interviews, so print it at good quality.

How many projects should a portfolio have? Six to twelve is enough in most fields. If you are starting out, three strong projects with clear stories beat a file full of average work.

I have no client work yet. How do I build a portfolio? Do three practice projects on real problems, such as redesigning a local restaurant's menu or editing an ad for a product you like, and say clearly that they are personal projects. University projects are a fair start for students if they are presented well.

Should my portfolio be in Arabic or English? It depends on your clients. Arabic reaches clients in Egypt and the Gulf faster; English matters if you work with foreign companies or on global platforms. The best option is two versions of the same work.

Will my portfolio show up in Google? A PDF sitting in a drive usually will not. A web page with a clear title and described images can appear when someone searches for your service, which is why a page with your name does more than a file alone.
